What is a Trilobite?

Trilobites have long been popular with fossil collectors, and they can be found in a wide variety of places around the world in a dazzling array of structures, sizes and colors. The trilobite, a relative of the modern horseshoe crab, was the first creature known to have advanced eyesight. The condition of their compound eyes, somewhat like the eyes of a fly, is a key feature that collectors look for. The state fossil of Ohio is a trilobite (Isotelus maximus) that reached up to 14" in length. Other species had intricicate spines, eyestalks or horns that capture the imagination. Unfortunately, fossil counterfeiting is very common with trilobites in particular. How can I tell if a specimen is authentic? Fortunately, By Nature Gallery works directly with those who find and prepare these fossils, and assures that all of our specimens are authentic. Read here for more on trilobite counterfeits.
